GERMAN MINISTERS LOOKING INTO TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN GHANA

On Wednesday, 8th April 2015 two German Ministers visited Training Institutions and training activities of the Ghana Skills Development Initiative (GSDI). Gerd Müller, Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development and Hermann Gröhe, Minster for Health arrived at ATTC (Accra Technical Training Center) in the afternoon and met the Executive Director of COTVET (Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training). After the principal of ATTC welcomed the ministers, they were introduced to the cooperative apprenticeship training for the informal sector. Together with a delegation from the ministries, the German parliament, the German embassy and German institutions as well as press members, Minister Müller and Minister Gröhe met apprentices and master craftspersons from the welding trade.

ATTC staff members and representatives from the Welders’ and Pipefitters’ Association of Ghana (WAPAG) explained the structure of the training.

The Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development took the opportunity and tried to weld himself, much to the entertainment of apprentices and master craftspersons.

Later on the Minister even sawed an iron piece by hand.

Having had interesting discussion in ATTC and with the welding experts on the apprenticeship system, the delegation continued to NVTI-PTI (National Vocational Training Institute).

As the Center Manager explained, the Pilot Training Institute currently trains apprentices in electronics, after having trained the mastercraftspersons. In addition, a training course for pharma technicians could be observed, this specific training is implemented through a public private partnership with LaGray. The two ministers and delegation members had the chance to discuss with the trainees and the facilitators from NVTI-PTI.

After about one hour of intensive and interesting impressions and discussions the delegation finally gathered again and the ATTC’s principal as well as NVTI-PTI’s manager handed over Kente cloths to the two Ministers. In return they received a football from the country of the current world champion in football.
