TRAINING FOR WELDING INSTRUCTORS AND MASTER CRAFTSPERSONS

Master Welders who are members of Welders and Pipe Fitters Association of Ghana (WAPAG) and Welding Instructors from Accra Technical Training Centre (ATTC) and Tema Technical Institute (TTI) participated in the workshop.

The Training sought to help the Master Craftspersons and Instructors who will be involved in the implementation of the cooperative apprenticeship system to understand, interpret and use the already developed curricula and teaching and learning materials which will be used for the programme.

It was also an opportunity for the two parties; Teachers and Master Craftspersons, to know each other and to start planning for the cooperative apprentice training.

This is because; apprentices should be trained to meet industry standards, changing needs of productivity and work safety. Therefore developing an efficient, effective and dynamic apprenticeship training programme is a necessity. For this reason, apprenticeship training will not be limited only to on- the- job training at the workplace but will include classroom instruction or training such as in a Vocational and Technical Training Institute, which is an excellent way of preparing the apprentice for the future.

Topics discussed in the workshop include, the overview of TVET Reform in Ghana, the concept of competency based training, the objectives of the GSDI, stakeholders involved in the GSDI project and their duties and responsibilities. More specifically the participants familiarized with how to use the CBT materials such as Occupational Standards, Units Specifications, Learning Materials, Workplace Guidelines, Apprentice Logbook as well as practical activities in welding.

The project’s advisor for the Training Providers, Mr. Robert Danful, who is also a welding expert together with Mrs. Gladys Quarshie a co facilitator, took participants through the action oriented workshop.

At the end, participant have become highly motivated and waiting eagerly to start the programme.
